Review:

Francis Frith was one of the early pioneers of photography, and his photographic odysseys turned him into something of a celebrity of his times.

This book contains a collection of his work from his three tours of Egypt and the Holy Lands, the first of which took place in 1856. There are a wide range of photographs, from ruins and landscapes to shots of touring Europeans, and also images showing the daily life of the peoples of Egypt and the Holy Lands.

The accompanying text places the images in their historical and cultural context. This book provides a fascinating insight into not only the world of a leading Victorian photographer, but also the middle east of the 19th century.
